Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

A siren sounds; a building crumbles; a Spitfire zooms overhead. Take cover, because it’s 1939 and Britain is at war. Deep down in the Anderson Shelter, we are going to be learning how and why evacuees had to make the long journey from their families and homes into unknown territory during our new topic, ‘A Child’s War’.

English themed activities will include poetry, narrative writing and a non-fiction piece.

In D.T/Art, we will be cooking wartime recipes using rationed ingredients and building structures.

Over the term, the children will participate in class reading sessions.

Weekly spelling sessions (Tuesday – Friday) will continue.

Maths lessons will follow the revised Year 6 curriculum and include focused arithmetic sessions.

Homework

There is an expectation that children will read at home daily either with an adult or independently. Their diaries will be regularly checked by the class teacher. This will need to be briefly recorded i.e. date, title and pages read. At the teacher’s discretion, a written task may be given.

This year there will be no weekly spelling homework. I will however be sending home a booklet of Year5/6 common exception words for children to practise; this will be checked on a Friday morning. Children will be tested weekly with a list of 20 random spelling words (including a few words which require the children to use the rules taught throughout the week).

All children have their login details for TT rockstars. They should continue to improve their rapid recall of multiplication facts using this. Extra Maths homework can be accessed via the children’s MyMaths log in.

Further classroom Information

PE kits need to be in school all the time please. Our P.E day will usually be a Wednesday; however, this may be subject to change.

I will, as always, work my hardest to ensure that the children have a happy, productive and successful Year 6.

Please don’t hesitate to speak with me at the end of the school day if you have any concerns or issues.

Thank you for your continued support.
