Our topic for this half term is ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’.
The children will be learning about all kinds of animals, big and small, domestic and wild. We will be focussing on sorting and classifying animals using the new vocabulary we will learn; mammal, amphibian, bird, fish, reptile, carnivore, herbivore and omnivore.
Later in the term, we will be holding a pet day where we hope to meet lots of different animals. If anyone has any friendly pets who would like to come and visit the children please let us know!
Year 1 will also be working towards preparing for the phonics screening check. The children will be asked to read real and ‘monster’ words by sounding out and blending the words. There are plenty of examples to be found online by searching for ‘Year 1 phonics screening check’. A workshop for parents will be taking place soon.
There is still an expectation that children will read at home daily with an adult. They will need to change their reading books when they come into school in the morning.
Spelling homework will be given on a Friday, alongside the relevant pages in their phonics books. These pages need to be completed and handed in on Thursday; spelling tests will be on Friday.
We may, from time to time, set a piece of research based homework. This is optional and may include something such as researching an element related to the current topic. Some children have enjoyed this over the last few years and love the opportunity to show off what they have done at home.
Other classroom Information
PE kits need to be in school all the time please - we will have PE lessons on Tuesday but sometimes have the opportunity for more.
Please refer to the school website about uniform. We encourage the children to wear the appropriate uniform at all times and to look smart. Please ensure that all clothes, including PE kits are labelled with your child’s name. If your child loses an item of clothes it is much easier to find it if it is named.
Water bottles are welcome in school at all times- please ensure these only contain water unless other arrangements have been made with the class teacher/ head teacher.
Please don’t hesitate to come and see us to discuss any of the above or if there are any problems or questions you have. We want all of the children to be happy in school, as well as enjoying a productive and successful term.
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs Cutter and the Year One Team.
