Welcome Back! We hope you had an enjoyable Easter 😊 This term our theme is ‘Beachcombers’.
Pack up some sandwiches, pick up a fishing net and keep your eyes peeled because we’re off to the coast to go beachcombing!
This term, we’ll visit a local beach to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the seashore and try to explore rock pools
to find living and non-living things. Bringing shells, pebbles and seaweed back to the classroom will help us to learn about
a wide range of coastal plants and creatures. We’ll read a range of seaside stories and use the coast as a setting for our
writing. Maps and film footage will help us to find out more about the coast and we’ll create a wide variety of artwork.
We’ll use books and the internet to search for information about the seashore and use our knowledge to write our own non-fiction texts.
There is still an expectation that children will read at home daily with an adult. Please encourage them to read at home and change their book independently.
There is now no formal maths homework however…. It is important to see maths as an important part of people’s everyday lives and not just as a standalone subject, therefore, any number work, maths questions when out and about would benefit the children considerably.
RE homework- there is no longer written RE homework. Please keep an eye out on our school newsletter though as this will let you know what we are doing in school and any suggestions for activities at home.
Spelling homework will be given on a Wednesday and needs to be returned to school on the following Tuesday. This could be in the new phase specific books we have that the children started last year or a list of words to learn from the year two curriculum.
We may, from time to time, set a piece of research based homework. This is optional and may include something such as researching an element related to the current topic. Some children have enjoyed this over the last few years and love the opportunity to show off what they have done at home.
If there is a reason that children are unable to do homework for a specific day, please let us know. This way the children will not need to worry about not being able to complete it etc.
Other classroom Information
PE kits need to be in school all the time please - we will have two PE lessons a week but sometimes have the opportunity for more.
School water bottles are welcome in school at all times- please ensure these only contain water unless other arrangements have been made with the class teacher/ head teacher.
Please refer to the school website about uniform. We encourage the children to wear the appropriate uniform at all times and to look smart.
At present, in Year 1, we don’t have a specified ‘Show and Tell’ time. If, however, the children have a piece of work or an out of school achievement that they would like to share with the class/school, please let us know. These can often be placed on our ‘Wow’ wall!
Please don’t hesitate to come and see us to discuss any of the above or if there are any problems or questions you have. We want all of the children to be happy in school, as well as enjoying a productive and successful term.
Thank you for your continued support,
Mrs Cutter and the Year One Team.
