Welcome back, we hope you had a great Christmas holiday and are looking forward to an exciting term ahead with our new topic- Towers, Tunnels and Turrets.
See the castle ahead? Get ready to invade its mighty walls! Shoot a projectile with an archer’s aim! Head across the drawbridge, over the moat and up to the top of the tower...
Then dig deep, deep down making burrows and tunnels, just like the animals who live underground.
And finally… meet three little pigs who need your help to build a strong fortress. Inside its strong walls they’ll be safe from the big, bad wolf!
No huffing and puffing will blow your fortress down!
As well as our ‘normal’ lessons, we will also be having theme days and holding our innovate stage. We will keep you posted about these.
There is still an expectation that children will read at home daily with an adult. The children have an incentive chart in the classroom to encourage them to read at home and change their book independently.
Maths homework will be given out on a Friday and needs to be handed in by Thursday morning at the latest. The books will be returned to the children with a new homework on the Friday. This homework will often be in the form of an online game/ activity but will sometimes be a written or practical activity. It is important to see maths as an important part of people’s everyday lives and not just as a standalone subject, therefore, any number work, maths questions when out and about would benefit the children considerably.
RE homework- there is no longer written RE homework. Please keep an eye out on our school newsletter though as this will let you know what we are doing in school and any suggestions for activities at home.
Spelling homework will be given on a Wednesday and needs to be returned to school on the following Tuesday. This could be in the new phase specific books we have or a list of words to learn from the Year One curriculum.
We may, from time to time, set a piece of research based homework. This is optional and may include something such as researching an element related to the current topic. Some children have enjoyed this over the last few years and love the opportunity to show off what they have done at home.
If there is a reason that children are unable to do homework for a specific day, please let us know. This way the children will not need to worry about not being able to complete it etc.
Other classroom Information
PE kits need to be in school all the time please- we will have two PE lessons a week but sometimes have the opportunity for more.
School water bottles are welcome in school at all times- please ensure these only contain water unless other arrangements have been made with the class teacher/ head teacher.
Please refer to the school website about uniform. We encourage the children to wear the appropriate uniform at all times and to look smart.
At present, in Year One, we don’t have a specified ‘Show and Tell’ time. If, however, the children have a piece of work or an out of school achievement that they would like to share with the class/ school, please let us know. These can often be placed on our ‘Wow’ wall.
Every week one child will be chosen to take home the class bear for the weekend. Please feel free to write about your weekend in the class book that will come home with the bear. Please do not feel that you have to do something spectacular, a short sentence about your child reading to the class bear will be greatly appreciated.
Please don’t hesitate to come and see us to discuss any of the above or if there are any problems or questions you have. We want all of the children to be happy in school, as well as enjoying a productive and successful term.
Thank you for your continued support,
Miss Monk and the Year One Team.
