Calculation Policy

 

 

 

Below are the calculation policies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

As part of the teaching at Sacred Heart, we feel it is important for children to be taught through a range of concrete (physical), pictorial and abstract representations of the Mathematics.

Concrete – children have the opportunity to use physical, real-life objects and manipulatives to help them understand the maths that they are doing. This could include: counting bears; hundreds, tens and ones materials; counters.

Pictorial – children build on the concrete approach by using pictorial representations.

Abstract – once children have developed a confident understanding through the concrete and pictorial representations, they are able to move onto more abstract methods of the formal written methods.
