Year 6

Year 6

Welcome to the Spring Term!

We hope you enjoyed a lovely Christmas break and are ready for the next term in Year 6. We have lots of hard work to get through but also a lot to look forward to.

Theme

Our current topic is ‘Leaving a Legacy: World War 2’. The children will continue to learn about this period of history including key events and the impact on various groups. Following this we will move to a geography topic ‘Many World, One Planet: Asia’. Our reading and writing will link closely with the topics which will help to deepen the children’s understanding.

Maths

Maths lessons will follow the Year 6 curriculum and include focused arithmetic sessions, as well as times tables practice. We will be moving on to algebra; fractions, decimals and percentages; area and perimeter, and statistics this term.

Science

Our next science topic of the year is ‘Light’.  We will look at how light travels, investigate shadows, explore what is meant by reflection and refractions and use our combined knowledge to create periscopes.

PE

Children are to come in to school on their PE day in their PE kit. Our PE day is Tuesday, so please wear a full PE kit, including trainers, on this day. Lessons will focus on NFL and gymnastics for the next term.

Homework

Children are expected to read daily and practise their spellings and times tables as standard each week. We will collect their reading journals at the end of each half term and the expectations for these have previously be sent out. They will also be given a worksheet each week that is either linked to the learning we’ve completed in class, a key skill they need to practice or revision based on previous learning which will need to be completed and handed in.

In addition, a homework grid has been created (see link below) with suggested learning activities to complete at home during Spring 1. We would love to see the outcomes including pictures of these to celebrate the children’s hard work.

Further classroom information

Please ensure that children have a spare set of shoes in school at all times (wellies are fine) as the children will be playing on the field even if the grass is wet. These spare shoes should be different from their PE shoes.

Please ensure children come to school each day with a water bottle so that they keep hydrated. They are welcome to refill this throughout the day.

Thank you for your continued support – we are very much looking forward to continuing the school year together.

Miss Fletcher and the Year Six Team.
