Year 6

Welcome to the Autumn Term!

We hope you enjoyed a wonderful summer holiday and are ready for your first term in Year 6. We are so excited to be guiding you through your final year in primary school.

Theme

Our first theme topic is ‘Leaving a Legacy: Vikings’. The children will learn about this period of history, including who they were and information about the raids and eventual settlements in England. Our reading and writing will link closely with this topic, which will deepen the children’s understanding of the topic.

Maths

Maths lessons will follow the Year 6 curriculum and include focused arithmetic sessions, as well as times tables practice. We will begin the year recapping and furthering children’s knowledge of place value before moving on to the four operations and fractions.

Science

Our first science topic of the year is ‘Animals including Humans’. We will recap our knowledge of the body and then look further into the circulatory system and the impact of drugs, alcohol and exercise on our bodies.

PE

Children are to come into school on their PE day in their PE kit. Our PE day is Tuesday, so please wear a full PE kit, including trainers, on this day. Lessons will focus on tennis and dodgeball for the first half term.

Homework

Children are expected to read daily and practise their spellings and times tables as standard each week. They will also be given a worksheet each week that is either linked to the learning we’ve completed in class, a key skill they need to practice or revision based on previous learning which will need to be completed and handed in.

In addition, a homework grid has been created (see link below) with suggested learning activities to complete at home during Autumn 1. We would love to see the outcomes, including pictures of these, to celebrate the children’s hard work.

Further classroom information

Please ensure that children have a spare set of shoes in school at all times (wellies are fine) as the children will be playing on the field even if the grass is wet. These spare shoes should be different from their PE shoes.

Please ensure children come to school each day with a water bottle so that they keep hydrated. They are welcome to refill this throughout the day.

Thank you for your continued support – we are very much looking forward to the new school year.

Miss Fletcher and the Year Six Team.
