Year Five
Autumn Term
Welcome back to Sacred Heart! I hope you all have had a wonderful Summer holiday and you are ready for an exciting first term in Year Five. The team is looking forward to the interesting and engaging work you will produce together.
Our Theme topic this term is Invaders and Settlers, which covers the period of the Romans, through the Anglo-Saxon era, into the Viking Age.
In English, we will use a variety of books to support different and engaging writing. This term we will use the book Hidden Figures to write a non-chronological report, the book Beowulf and create our own version of the legend, the book Curiosity to create an explanation piece and the book Riddle of the Runes and create an alternate ending for the story.
In Maths, our topics for this term will be place value, negative numbers, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division.
In Science, we will be learning all about properties and changes of material in the first half term, and Earth and Space in the second half term and in RE, we will be on the topic Creation and Covenant.
Spellings
The children will be given new spellings every Monday, with a spelling test on the Friday. Please make sure your child practices their spellings every day.
Reading
Children will be bringing reading books home and it is still really important that the children are reading every day. The expectation is for the children to bring in their reading record every day.
Times tables
The times tables expectations for Year Five are that they know all the facts for rapid recall. This means recall of 5 seconds. Each child has a log on to TT Rockstars to practice the multiplication and division facts.
Homework is added to TT Rockstars every Monday and we will be checking it on the following Monday. Please ensure your child spends 5 to 10 minutes every school day making sure they are increasing their tables fluency.
We are running a program called Times Table Superheroes. The children will be given a times table sheet to practice which will be tested every week. To move onto the next times table sheet, the children must get all questions correct!
PE
Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. On these days, we are asking the children to come into school in their full PE kit, including trainers.
Water bottles
Please can all children make sure they have a water bottle with them each day; they are welcome to fill their bottle up throughout the day at school.
