Year 6

Welcome to the Summer Term

We hope you all had a restful and peaceful Easter holiday and that the children are ready for their last term at primary school. We have many exciting things planned!

Our theme topic is currently ‘Asia’. Last term, we focused on the geographical elements of the continent; this term we will look at how Asia influences the rest of the world. Through our learning of trade, food, music and art, the children will learn about the phrase ‘melting pot’ and further their understanding of how countries are influenced by each other. Our writing and DT lessons will link closely with this topic which will deepen the children’s understanding of the diversity of Asia.

The children will participate in whole class reading and writing sessions throughout the week. Weekly spelling sessions will continue. Please note, there will be no weekly ‘set’ words for the children to practise, but instead they will have a weekly random spelling test based on the rules studied in class.

Maths lessons will follow the Year 6 curriculum and include focused arithmetic sessions, as well as TT Rockstar’s practice. There will be some project-based lessons where the children will work collaboratively and use their mathematical knowledge to complete tasks.

In Science, we will continue learning about ‘Electricity’.  This is very much a practical topic where the children will use their understanding of how electricity works to design and make their own circuits. It will also be an opportunity for them to think about renewable/non-renewable energy sources and how this impacts the world around them. The second unit will focus on ‘Light’.

Homework

There is an expectation that children will read at home daily, either with an adult or independently. At the moment, children are reading in school, but not necessarily with an adult. Children are expected to record their daily reading in their reading logs – these should be in school every day and will be checked by an adult on a Tuesday morning.

All children have their login details for TT Rockstars. They should continue to improve their rapid recall of multiplication facts using this. Quick recall of times tables is integral to the children’s arithmetic success this year. Year 6 adults will be frequently checking how often and for how long children are playing.

Standard Assessment Tests

The end of Key Stage 2 SATs tests will take place May 13th – 16th. There is no need to do anything special to prepare for these tests. The children have been working hard in school and the adults are supporting them to achieve their potential. The homework packs that were sent home should have given the children an idea of their strengths and what they still need to focus on. Now it is all about attitude, focus and determination! The tests are a chance for the children to show all the skills and knowledge they have developed during their time at primary school. We know they will do their best.

Further classroom Information

Children are to come in to school on their PE day in their PE kit. Our PE day has changed from Thursday to Tuesday, so please wear a full PE kit, including trainers, on this day. Lessons will focus on Athletics and Swimming. Dates for swimming are still being finalised – we will contact you with further information soon. Please also ensure that children have a spare set of shoes in school at all times (wellies are fine) as the children will be playing on the field even if the grass is wet. These spare shoes should be different from their PE shoes.

Please ensure children come to school each day with a clear water bottle so that they keep hydrated. They are welcome to refill this throughout the day. Last term, there were a few incidences of children bringing squash and energy drinks to school.  May I take this opportunity to remind you that these are not permitted.

We will, as always, do our best to ensure that the children have a happy, productive and successful time at Sacred Heart.

Please email any questions/queries to schooloffice@sacredheart.peterborough.sch.uk. These can then be forwarded to us and we can reply/make a phone call if needed.

Thank you for your continued support – we are very much looking forward to the term ahead.
