Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

We hope you have had a lovely holiday and are ready to settle back in to life at Sacred Heart. We are looking forward to an exciting and busy term. Mrs Mortimer will be teaching on Mondays and Tuesdays and Miss Houghton will be teaching on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

We will start our Maths lessons this year, by looking at place value, whilst also developing our arithmetic skills. We will then focus on addition and subtraction.

We will continue building our reading and phonics skills using the Little Wandle scheme. The children will take part in daily phonics lessons and will continue to read the Little Wandle books. Please ensure the reading books are returned to school every Monday.

In Science, our first unit is ‘Animals, including Humans’. We will learn what animals need to survive and how animals and humans grow and change. We will look at how to keep ourselves fit and healthy.

Our first unit in Theme this term is Geography, where we will be learning about ‘Our World’. We will develop our understanding of the Earth and the world around us. We will become confident when using maps to identify continents, countries and other geographical features.

In RE, our topic is ‘Creation and Covenant’. We will explore the story of Noah from Genesis and use this to help deepen our understanding of covenant and sin. We are looking forward to weekly class liturgy and starting to encourage the children to take a greater role in planning these sessions.

Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please remember that children should come to school wearing their PE kit on these days.

Please remember to bring a full water bottle to school and to name all clothes and belongings (particularly jumpers)!

we look forward to working with you this year.

Phonics and early reading

This year we will be introducing phonics and reading using the Little Wandle scheme. The children will start learning initial sounds and learning how to blend to read words. After a few weeks, the children will start the reading scheme. Children will bring home a reading for pleasure book, which they may change as often as they wish.  Following the final reading session in school on a Thursday, the children will bring home a ‘celebration’ book to read with you. The celebration books must be returned on the following Monday. Please write a short comment in their reading record books when you read with them each day.

More communication about reading books and our phonics scheme will follow.

Tapestry online learning journal

Within the next few weeks, we will be sharing information with parents to explain our use of the Tapestry online learning journal. This is a fantastic way to see what your child has been up to at school and to add your own observations about the things you do at home.

School lunches

If your child is having school lunches, please look at the options and choose with your child at home, using the Aspens website. This saves time at school and ensures the children will have a meal they will enjoy.

P.E.

Our first P.E. day in Reception class will be on a Friday. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their PE kit on Fridays, starting on the 20th September.

Questions and queries

We are sure your children will be very happy at Sacred Heart, however if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your on-going support, we are looking forward to working with you all.
